Buildmate.co.za is the Western Cape's fastest-growing online building materials supplier — 10,000+ products, next-day delivery, and a digital-first approach.

We're not a hardware store. We're a technology-driven supply partner built for professionals. Our online calculators, quoting tools, and specialist product knowledge help contractors source the right materials, in the right quantities, at low trade prices — without wasting time driving between suppliers.

We're part of the Scheltema Group (80-year construction heritage in the Western Cape) but operate like a startup — small team, fast decisions, big ambitions.

Our marketing challenge is simple: We're visible but need to improve our CTR. We want someone to turn impressions into clicks, clicks into customers, and customers into fans.


The Role

You'll be our in-house marketing engine — responsible for growing organic traffic, building our brand on social, helping to expand our product range, and making sure Buildmate stands out online, primarily to our professional (B2B) audiences, and secondarily our home/DIY customers.

This isn't a "post on social and wait" role. You'll execute a content and SEO strategy that directly drives revenue. You'll have AI tools, a clear playbook, and strategic support from an experienced marketing professional — but the day-to-day execution is yours.

You'll own:

  • Content that ranks on Google and gets shared on social
  • Our Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn presence
  • Email marketing to 11,000+ customers
  • The brand's visual identity, voice and personality online

What You'll Do

Drive Organic Growth (40%)

  • Write and publish SEO-optimized content: price guides, product comparisons, how-to guides, and project material lists that professionals find valuable.
  • Develop and implement new meta titles and descriptions to improve CTR
  • Enhance our calculator pages with supporting content
  • Work with our CTO/developer on technical SEO upgrades
  • Position our content for AI search (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT recommendations)
  • Track and report performance weekly in Google Search Console and Google Analytics

Social Media & Brand (30%)

  • Manage and grow Buildmate's Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn pages
  • Create engaging content that showcases our culture and people — reels, posts, stories
  • Develop and post regularly (3-5× per week)
  • Build campaigns around key and new products, promotions, and seasons
  • Help develop Facebook Marketplace – keeping products up to date with a PIM feed
  • Repurpose website content into social-friendly formats e.g. LinkedIn
  • Track and report performance weekly in Meta Business Suite
  • Make Buildmate a brand that builders actually enjoy following

Email & Campaigns (15%)

  • Develop and send weekly email campaigns to our 10,000+ registered customers
  • Feature new content, product highlights, and promotions
  • Track and report open rates, CTR, and revenue from email

Range Growth & Product Marketing (15%)

  • Support out-reach to existing and new suppliers
  • Help collect product information: pricing, specifications, data sheets, images
  • Write product FABs for new products, optimised for SEO/AIO
  • Organise product photography
  • Work with our data manager to get new products into our PIM and live on the website
  • Generate monthly price lists from our PIM for the sales team

Google Ads Support (5%)

  • Liaise with our external agency that manages Google Ads
  • Provide them with new content, product launches, and promotional priorities
  • Review performance reports and flag opportunities

What You Won't Do

  • Technical website development (our CTO and developer handle that)
  • Manage Google Ads directly (agency handles)
  • Operations, delivery, or customer service
  • Graphic design from scratch

Google Search Console, Google Analytics, Magento CMS, Mailchimp, Canva, Unsplash, Meta Business Suite, Claude/ChatGPT, Plytix (PIM), Google Docs/Sheets, Slack, WhatsApp


Who You Are

You're the right fit if:

  • You love content — writing it, publishing it, seeing it rank and perform
  • You're native to social media — love posting and know what gets engagement
  • You're excited by e-commerce and tech startups
  • You get a kick out of watching numbers go up (clicks, followers, revenue)
  • You're organised — you can run a content calendar, juggle channels, and hit deadlines
  • You're curious about the construction industry (or willing to get stuck in and learn fast)
  • You're comfortable using AI and Canva to draft content and visuals
  • You can write clearly and persuasively for a South African audience

Must have:

  • 1-3 years' experience in digital marketing, content marketing or B2B marketing
  • Understanding of SEO basics (keywords, meta titles, content structure)
  • Experience managing social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn)
  • Strong written communication — clear, punchy, error-free
  • Valid driver's licence and own transport
  • Based in Cape Town

Nice to have:

  • E-commerce experience (Magento, or similar)
  • Basic email marketing experience (Mailchimp or similar)
  • Experience in building materials, construction, hardware, or a related industry
  • Familiarity with product information management (PIM)
  • Video content creation (e.g. phone-shot reels)
  • Degree or diploma in marketing or communications, (not essential if you can demonstrate ability)

Working Arrangement

Location Buildmate Athlone, Cape Town
Schedule 4 days remote, 1 day Athlone office
Reports to Co-Founder / Marketing Lead
Support Strategic direction, creative concepts, and copywriting guidance from leadership. Technical implementation from CTO/developer.
Team You'll work closely with our marketing lead, sales team, data manager, and operations

Compensation

Salary From R14,000/month (negotiable based on experience)
